Peter Michael Au Paradis 2017

Producer’s notes

The 2017 season began with abundant rain that ended California’s long drought. A cool spring delayed budbreak slightly, warmer weather than normal after the colour change sped up ripening, and cooler conditions before the harvest, from 20 to 29 September, let the fruit ripen gradually. The winery describes a ruby colour that is nearly black, with violet highlights; aromas of blackcurrant and crème de cassis with meaty nuances and touches of plum brandy, vanilla, allspice and red rose; and a palate of juicy blackcurrant, fresh leather and black olive, with plentiful but fine tannins and a mineral note like iron. It calls the wine round, refined and complex, with great length, and expects it to age gracefully for two decades or more. Bottled unfined and unfiltered.
