Sine Qua Non
Sine Qua Non is the California winery of Elaine and Manfred Krankl. It started with the 1994 vintage, when they made four and a half barrels of Syrah called Queen of Spades. The winery is at Oak View, where they live.
Syrah and Grenache lead the wines, supported by Mourvèdre, Roussanne and Viognier. The Krankls also grow Petit Manseng, Touriga Nacional, Graciano and Petite Sirah. The winery does not have enough wine to go around and keeps a waiting list.
Vineyards
The Krankls own and farm four vineyards.
- Eleven Confessions: 33 acres in the Sta. Rita Hills. 22 acres were planted in 2001, mainly with Syrah and Grenache.
- Cumulus: the home vineyard at Oak View, where the winery is. The first block was planted in 2004 with Syrah, Grenache and Roussanne.
- The Third Twin: near Los Alamos, bought in spring 2010. Mostly Syrah with a little Petite Sirah planted in 2000, and a further block planted in 2011.
- Molly Aïda: 2 acres of Mourvèdre in Tepusquet Canyon, at about 1,800 feet. First picked in 2015.
Their one other fruit source is Bien Nacido in Santa Maria, which they do not own. Some earlier wines also include fruit from White Hawk.
