Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair
Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair is home to La Romanée, the smallest appellation in France at 0.85 hectares, owned entirely by the Liger-Belair family since 1815, and Robert Parker awarded the 1911 100 points. Louis-Michel Liger-Belair took back the family vines in 2000 and has made the domaine one of the stars of Vosne-Romanée, with La Romanée now among Burgundy's most expensive wines.
La Romanée lies just above Romanée-Conti. The domaine also makes Échezeaux, Clos Vougeot and the premier crus Les Suchots, Les Petits Monts, Les Chaumes and Aux Reignots, along with Nuits-Saint-Georges. The vines are farmed organically and ploughed partly by horse, the grapes are fully destemmed, and the wines are perfumed and silky. Until 2005 Bouchard Père et Fils sold part of the La Romanée crop, so older La Romanée bottles may carry the Bouchard label.
